Tuesday was a dark day for cloud photo enthusiasts, as we lost one of the best and brightest services for bringing mobile and even desktop images onto devices anywhere there's an internet connection.
Everpix announced Tuesday that the company is shutting down, with the service immediately switching to read-only mode as part of a gradual phase out that will last until December 15.
"It’s frustrating (to say the least) that we cannot continue to work on Everpix," the company explained in a blog post. "We were unable to secure sufficient funding in order to properly scale the business, and our endeavors to find a new home for Everpix did not come to pass. At this point, we have no other options but to discontinue the service."
Everpix was designed as a way to better manage photos by hosting them in the cloud, available from any mobile device or web browser. While the company certainly wasn't the only solution in that space, they were indeed one of the slickest.
According to an insider report from The Verge, social networking service Path pulled out of an acquisition deal for Everpix at the eleventh hour last month, which was the final hope for keeping the company afloat.
The former Apple engineers who founded Everpix are now scrambling to raise funds to wind down the service and refund users who subscribed to the paid version. More information on the Everpix shutdown can be found in an online FAQ on the company's website.
